The New Year has brought new headaches for Russia’s foreign policy. In the space of a week, Moscow not only lost its key ally in Latin America with the capture of Nicolas Maduro, but also saw the US show no signs of hesitation in seizing a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic even despite a Russian navy convoy. Both leaders and propagandists in Moscow are keeping their distance and repeating a familiar mantra: if you ignore it, it will go away.
