Security services turn on unruly tabloid
Hello! This week we cover the raids and arrests of top figures at the Baza Telegram channel, an outlet with close ties to the security agencies, which appear to have now turned against the publication they fed for years.
Baza targeted in Russia’s escalating media crackdown
Baza — the Telegram channel known for its links to Russia’s security services — was raided last week by law enforcement bodies, with its editor-in-chief Gleb Trifonov arrested on suspicion of paying bribes to access confidential police data. The case is the latest in an ongoing effort to stem leaks of sensitive information. It seems that the Russian authorities, which have spent years methodically eliminating independent media and then moving on to anonymous Telegram channels, are now turning their fire on relatively loyal publications.
