What did the Kremlin learn from studying the Iran protests?
Iranian authorities this week defended their brutal crackdown on the wave of anti-government protests that rocked the country at the start of the year. The official line, outlined by Iran's foreign minister in The Wall Street Journal, is that peaceful protests against economic reforms escalated into bloody clashes under the influence of domestic “terrorists” and “foreign agents”. To end the clashes, the authorities switched off the internet and resorted to violent suppression.
