What happens if Russia loses Orban?
Hello! Welcome to your weekly guide to the Russian economy, written by Alexander Kolyandr and Alexandra Prokopenko and brought to you by The Bell. Ahead of this weekend’s crucial elections in Hungary, we look at what it would mean for Russia if Viktor Orban loses.
Orban on the brink. Is the Kremlin concerned?
Hungary votes in parliamentary elections this weekend, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban — a global icon of nationalist conservatism and the EU’s most Russia-friendly leader — is in danger of defeat. The Economist called the election “Hungary’s most important since the fall of communism”, while Politico described it as “extremely important” for all of Europe. The vote will determine whether the global MAGA-aligned movement has a shot at upending Europe, or if Hungarians will finally reject Orban’s creeping authoritarianism. The elections hold significance for Russia on both the political and economic fronts, given Hungary is Moscow’s main ally within the EU.
